Bettina Speckner

For the Photoetching in Zinc and the Photoenamelling I use mostly photos I took myself. Sometimes I also take found pictures. For me it is important that my pictures are timeless. The Ferrotype is an old photo-technique, from the end of the 19th century. I find the old plates or they were given to me and I work on them to transform them into my jewellery.

I never work with the intention to decorate things or to make them look prettier, I try to discover the soul of an object or the essence of a photograph and want to shape something new which appeals to me and to other people far beyond the optical appearance.

My images do not talk about situations but give kind of access to “own” stories. But who owns them? We, the beholder or the piece itself?

I was born in 1962 in Offenburg/Germany. Between 1984 and 1992 I studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Munich, first in the Painting class of Prof. H. Sauerbruch and then in the Jewellery class of Prof. H. Jünger and since 1991 Prof. O. Künzli.

Since 1995 I work as a free lance artist I exhibit and give lectures and workshops in different countries. The interaction between the everyday life and the far away I find most exciting.
